Sasol SciFest 2007 is around the corner, so register NOW to book your space at Africa's largest science festival!
The first of its kind in Southern Africa, Sasol SciFest is South Africa's annual national science festival held March in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.
Sasol SciFest features over 600 events including popular lectures, interactive exhibitions, workshops, an interschool mathematics relay, educational theatre, field trips, a soap box derby, laser show, high school quizzes, the SciKidz Experience, Science Olympics, science shows, Sunset Shows, tours and even a FilmFest. Attendance now exceeds 40 000 visitors.
Sasol SciFest® is South Africa's National Festival of Science, Engineering and Technology® which takes place in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, in March every year.
Sasol SciFest was the first festival of its kind on the continent and was launched in 1997 as a high profile, national event to promote a culture of science in South Africa in a festive way. The Festival aims to break through popular misconceptions and create a new mindset about science, engineering and technology by demonstrating that these disciplines underpin our everyday activities. Visitors are able to interact with science in a colourful and non-threatening environment, while the Festival's incredible range of interactive events also provides learners with a great opportunity to discover science outside the classroom.
Sasol SciFest also allows South Africa and the world's leading scientists the opportunity to share their work, make science accessible to and within the reach of ordinary people, give career guidance, and act as role models for our youth.
Remember to look out for our other events that will take the best of Sasol SciFest to your dorp or city through competitions, educational theatre, exhibitions, lectures, mall promotions, science shows and workshops. Watch the press for details or contact us to join our mailing list.
make science count
Innovation
Design and innovation provide us with simple solutions to everyday problems, whether it be on a massive scale in industry or on a smaller scale at home. Sasol SciFest will showcase, encourage and support such design and innovation ideas.
International Polar Year 2007/2008
Over 14,500km² (from Cape Town to Cairo… literally) of ice in the Antarctic Peninsula has cracked and separated from the continent over the last 50 years. Warmer sea water caused by global warming is thought to have eroded the ice from underneath. But the melting of Antarctica's ice caps contributes only 15% to the current global sea level rise of 2mm a year. Sea ice in the Arctic is melting even faster.
The Polar Regions might be remote areas of the Earth, but each has profound significance for the Planet's climate and ultimately environments, ecosystems and human society. Sasol SciFest 2007 will form part of South Africa's programme to celebrate International Polar Year.
Join us as we seek to understand the current global climate and what might happen in the future. Sasol SciFest will highlight the scientific evidence for and measures against global warming, the effect on the condition of the poles, their ecosystems, and communities, and how the poles interact with and influence the oceans, landmasses, and atmosphere of our Planet.
Mathematics
Sasol SciFest in association with Old Mutual will introduce a dedicated mathematics component to the Festival in 2007. Participate in lectures, exhibitions, workshops, and other sch-weet events that will let you do what you never thought possible… enjoy mathematics!
