The Biovac Institute
About Us
The Biovac Institute, which began operation in 2002, is a new public-private partnership (PPP) between the Biovac Consortium and the Department of Health, incorporating the State Vaccine Institute into a commercial company. Biovac Aims to revitalize the vaccine industry in South Africa and build capacity in all aspects of vaccine manufacture, from product for clinical trials to full scale commercial production for both local use and export markets.
Services and Products
Biovac has different product and service offerings within the vaccine development and manufacturing chain:
- New Product Development
Biovac is currenlty developing combination vaccines to build value within the institute and to take advantage of the opportunity to supply the African market with pentavalent vaccines. Currently, DTP combination vaccines against diptheria, tetanus and pertussis are available but are not produced due to poor profitability. By developing vaccines which include Hepatitis B and HIB (Haemophilus influenza B) a profitable vaccine would be produced, resulting in increased childhood illness protection.
- Manufacturing Services
Biovac provides a formulation, bulk filling and medical warehousing facility and packaging service to companies within the Biovac group and third parties.
- Sales and Distribution
Biovac imports, packages and distributes vaccines to the private and public healthcare sector in Southern Africa.
The company is highly experienced in vaccine importing, marketing and distribution, and is an integral part of the South African Vaccination Programme, supplying all the vaccine needs of the South African government.
The investment of more than R120 million will be used to position the Biovac Institute as an international vaccine manufacturer, which develops and distributes relevant vaccines for its market, to build new and upgrade exisitng facilities to purchase new equipment and to employ more resources to increase their competitive advantage.
Key People
The Biovac Institute currently employs over 300 scientists and is lead by Selwyn Kahanowitz, a pharmacist who has extensive knowledge of the vaccine manufacturing and distribution industry.
